Towns and Villages
Freila
Granada, Andalucía, Spain
The pretty village of Freila (see Map), in the Altiplano de Granada, Andalucía, Spain, is situated on a hill overlooking Lake Negratín. It has stunning views over the lake and the surrounding deeply eroded, desert-like landscape, often referred to as the "Badlands". The village has its own lakeside beach at Cortijo del Cura as well as a campsite.
Freila Town Hall
Church and Tower
The area has been lived in since prehistoric times. Evidence of its importance during the occupation by the Moors can be seen in the remains of the old town fortifications, built in the 12thC and 13thC. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación was built in the 16thC after the Christian reconquest.
More than 60% of the dwellings in the village are cave houses (casas cueva), many of which are excavated into the hillside, seemingly one on top of the other. The remnants of the castle, together with the caves, make Freila one of the most picturesque places in the Altiplano de Granada.
There are a number of places to stay in the area (alojamientos, casas rurales and hoteles). Some of the accommodation is in attractive and comfortable cave houses (casas cueva).
